swedish massage

The healing power of touch is a very ancient concept but it was a Swedish physiologist, Peter Henry Ling, who developed a clear system of massage and exercise in the early 1800’s. Swedish massage is generally what’s considered a full body massage, as it usually works on all major muscle groups in the body.

Swedish massage aims to relax the muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, mostly rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood to the heart. The therapist uses his/her hands, arms and elbows to apply pressure. During Swedish massage, massage therapist use massage oil to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes over the entire body. Swedish massage is the most widely spread type of massage in the Western word and it also known as classic massage.

Swedish massage uses five main strokes to stimulate the circulation of blood through the body; effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotement (tapping) and vibration. Each type of stroke has a different therapeutic benefit. The techniques can be adapted to individuals needs by means of pressure.
